Étymologie et composants

The Chinese character 词 (cí) is composed of two parts: 言 (yán), which means "speech" or "word," and 糸 (mì), which means "silk thread." The combination of these two characters suggests the idea of "words strung together like silk threads," which is an apt metaphor for the way that words are used to create language. The character 词 has a long history in Chinese, dating back to the Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BC). It was originally used as a general term for any kind of spoken or written language, but over time it came to be used more specifically to refer to poetry and other literary works. In modern Chinese, 词 is still used in this sense, but it can also be used more broadly to refer to any kind of word or phrase. The character 词 is also used in a number of other languages, including Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese. In these languages, it is typically pronounced as "shi" or "ci."
