Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 电车 (diànchē) for "tram" or "electric car" is a compound of two characters: 电 (diàn), meaning "electricity," and 车 (chē), meaning "vehicle." The term "diànchē" was coined in the late 19th century to describe the new mode of transportation that used electricity as its power source. Prior to this, trams were powered by horses or steam engines. The term "diànchē" quickly gained popularity and became the standard Chinese word for "tram." It is still used today in both mainland China and Taiwan.
