Étymologie et composants

The Chinese word 东方 (dōngfāng) for "east" is composed of two characters: 东 (dōng) and 方 (fāng). The character 东 originally depicted the sun rising over the horizon, and thus came to represent the east. The character 方 originally meant "square" or "region", and was later used to refer to the four cardinal directions. When combined, the two characters 东方 literally mean "the square of the rising sun", and thus refer to the east. It's worth noting that the character 东 is also used in other words related to the east, such as 东方红 (dōngfāng hóng, "The East is Red"), a famous Chinese patriotic song, and 东方明珠 (dōngfāng míngzhū, "Oriental Pearl"), a nickname for the city of Shanghai.
