The Chinese word 放学 (fàngxué) is composed of two characters: 放 (fàng) and 学 (xué). The character 放 (fàng) means "to release, to let go, to put down, or to set free". The character 学 (xué) means "to learn, to study, or to acquire knowledge". When these two characters are combined, they form the word 放学 (fàngxué), which literally means "to release from school" or "to dismiss from school". In other words, 放学 (fàngxué) refers to the end of the school day, when students are released from school and allowed to go home.
