The Chinese word 随便 (suíbiàn) is composed of two characters: 随 (suí) and 便 (biàn). The character 随 originally meant "to follow" or "to accompany", and later extended to mean "casual" or "unrestricted". The character 便 originally meant "convenient" or "easy", and later extended to mean "casual" or "informal". When combined, the two characters 随便 literally mean "to follow convenience" or "to do as one pleases". This meaning is reflected in the modern usage of the word, which can be translated as "casual", "informal", or "as you like". For example, you can say 随便坐 (suíbiàn zuò) to invite someone to sit down informally, or 随便吃 (suíbiàn chī) to tell someone to eat whatever they like.
