The Chinese character 与 (yǔ) is composed of two parts: 亻(rén) and 予 (yǔ). The radical 亻(rén) indicates that the character is related to a person, while the phonetic component 予 (yǔ) provides a clue to its pronunciation. The original meaning of 与 was "to give", which can still be seen in its modern usage in phrases like 给予 (gěiyǔ, "to give") and 赠予 (zèngyǔ, "to present"). Over time, the meaning of 与 expanded to include the idea of "together with" or "in company with", as in the phrase 与你同行 (yǔ nǐ tóngxíng, "to walk together with you"). Today, 与 is commonly used as a conjunction meaning "and" or "with", as in the sentence 他与她一起去了公园 (tā yǔ tā yīqǐ qùle gōngyuán, "He went to the park with her").
