The Chinese word 责任 (zérèn) is composed of two characters: 任 (rèn) and 责 (zé). 任 originally meant "to bear a burden" or "to take charge of something". It is often used in the sense of "duty" or "responsibility". 责, on the other hand, originally meant "to blame" or "to hold someone accountable". When combined, the two characters form the word 责任, which carries the meaning of "responsibility" or "obligation". In modern Chinese, 责任 is commonly used in a variety of contexts, such as 个人责任 (gèrén zérèn, personal responsibility), 社会责任 (shèhuì zérèn, social responsibility), and 职业责任 (zhíyè zérèn, professional responsibility).
