The Chinese word 傍晚 (bàngwǎn) is a compound word consisting of two characters: 傍 (bàng) and 晚 (wǎn). The character 傍 originally meant "to lean against" or "to be close to", and later extended to mean "side" or "evening". The character 晚 originally meant "late" or "dusk", and later extended to mean "evening". Thus, the compound word 傍晚 literally means "leaning against the evening", which figuratively refers to the time of day when the sun is setting and the evening is approaching. In modern Chinese, 傍晚 is commonly used to refer to the time of day between sunset and nightfall, which is roughly equivalent to the English word "evening".
