The character 播 originally meant "to sow seeds" or "to scatter," and it has been used in this sense since the Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BCE). The character 放 originally meant "to let go" or "to release," and it has been used in this sense since the Western Zhou dynasty (c. 1046-771 BCE).When the two characters are combined to form 播放, the meaning changes to "to broadcast" or "to play" (as in music or video).
