The Chinese word 播放 (bòfàng) is composed of two characters: 播 (bò) and 放 (fàng). The character 播 originally meant "to sow seeds" or "to scatter," and it has been used in this sense since the Shang dynasty (c. 1600-1046 BCE). The character 放 originally meant "to let go" or "to release," and it has been used in this sense since the Western Zhou dynasty (c. 1046-771 BCE).When the two characters are combined to form 播放, the meaning changes to "to broadcast" or "to play" (as in music or video). This is because the act of broadcasting or playing something involves both "scattering" (播) and "releasing" (放) it into the air or into a space where it can be heard or seen. The word 播放 is commonly used in modern Chinese to refer to the act of playing music or video on a device such as a CD player, DVD player, or computer. It can also be used to refer to the act of broadcasting a television or radio program.
