The Chinese word 妇女 (fùnǚ) for "women" is composed of two characters: 女 (nǚ), meaning "woman" or "female", and 子 (zǐ), meaning "child" or "offspring". The character 女 is a pictograph depicting a woman with long hair, while the character 子 is a pictograph depicting a child in the womb. Together, the two characters 妇女 (fùnǚ) can be interpreted as "women who give birth to children" or "women of childbearing age". This etymology reflects the traditional Chinese view of women as primarily responsible for reproduction and childrearing. However, in modern Chinese society, the term 妇女 (fùnǚ) is used more broadly to refer to all women, regardless of their age or marital status.
