The Chinese character 捡 (jiǎn) is composed of two parts: the radical 扌(shǒu), which indicates an action related to the hand, and the phonetic component 检 (jiǎn), which provides a clue to its pronunciation. The original meaning of 捡 is "to pick up something from the ground". It can be traced back to the oracle bone script, where it was depicted as a hand holding a stick to pick up an object. Over time, the character simplified and its meaning expanded to include the idea of "to select" or "to choose". In modern Chinese, 捡 is commonly used in phrases such as 捡东西 (jiǎn dōngxi, "to pick up something"), 捡便宜 (jiǎn piányi, "to take advantage of a bargain"), and 捡漏 (jiǎn lòu, "to pick up a bargain").
