The character 利 originally meant "profit" or "benefit", and is composed of the radical 刂 (dāo), which represents a knife, and the phonetic component 利 (lì). The character 息 originally meant "to stop" or "to rest", and is composed of the radical 宀 (mián), which represents a roof, and the phonetic component 息 (xī). When combined, the two characters 利息 (lìxī) took on the meaning of "interest", referring to the profit or benefit that is gained from lending money or investing capital.
