The Chinese word 年纪 (niánjì) is composed of two characters: 年 (nián), meaning "year", and 纪 (jì), meaning "record" or "age". Together, they literally mean "age record" or "age mark". The word 年纪 is used to refer to a person's age or the length of time that has passed since a particular event. For example, a person who is 20 years old would be said to be 二十岁 (èrshí suì), literally "twenty years old". The word 年纪 can also be used to refer to a period of time, such as a decade or a century. For example, the 20th century would be said to be 二十世纪 (èrshí shìjì), literally "twenty centuries".
