The Chinese word 实践 (shíjiàn) is composed of two characters: 实 (shí) and 践 (jiàn). The character 实 originally meant "real" or "true", and was often used in contrast to the character 虚 (xū), which meant "empty" or "false". Over time, the meaning of 实 expanded to include the idea of "practice" or "action", as opposed to mere theory or speculation. The character 践 originally meant "to step on" or "to tread", and was often used in the context of walking or traveling. When combined, the two characters 实践 came to mean "to put into practice" or "to carry out". In modern Chinese, 实践 is often used in the context of scientific research or experimentation, where it refers to the process of testing a hypothesis or theory through observation and experimentation.
