The Chinese word 思想 (sīxiǎng) for "thought" or "idea" is composed of two characters: 思 (sī) and 想 (xiǎng). The character 思 originally meant "to think" or "to ponder", and it is composed of the radical ⺬ (xīn), which represents the heart, and the phonetic component 厶 (sī). The character 想 originally meant "to imagine" or "to visualize", and it is composed of the radical 目 (mù), which represents the eye, and the phonetic component 相 (xiāng). When combined, the two characters 思 and 想 form the word 思想, which refers to the process of thinking, reasoning, and forming ideas.
