The Chinese character 摘 (zhāi) is composed of two parts: the radical 手 (shǒu), meaning "hand", and the phonetic component 翟 (dí), which is a variant of the character 翟 (dí), meaning "pheasant". The original meaning of 摘 was "to pluck feathers from a bird", which is reflected in the fact that the character is often used in words related to picking or selecting, such as 摘花 (zhāihuā, "to pick flowers") and 摘抄 (zhāichāo, "to excerpt"). In addition, 摘 can also be used in the sense of "to summarize" or "to abstract", as in 摘录 (zhāilù, "to make a summary") and 摘要是 (zhāiyào, "abstract").
