The Chinese word 哲学 (zhéxué) for "philosophy" is a compound of two characters: **哲** (zhé) and **学** (xué). The character 哲 (zhé) originally meant "wise" or "sage" and was often used as a title for ancient Chinese philosophers. The character 学 (xué) originally meant "to learn" or "to study" and was often used to refer to the process of acquiring knowledge. When these two characters are combined, they form the word 哲学 (zhéxué), which literally means "the study of wisdom" or "the study of sages". This term was first used in China during the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE) to refer to the study of the teachings of ancient Chinese philosophers such as Confucius and Laozi. Over time, the meaning of 哲学 (zhéxué) expanded to include the study of Western philosophy and other philosophical traditions. Today, it is the standard Chinese word for "philosophy".
