The Chinese word 总统 (zǒngtǒng) for "president" is a compound of two characters: 总 (zǒng), meaning "general" or "overall", and 统 (tǒng), meaning "to unite" or "to lead". The term 总统 was first used in China in the late 19th century, when it was adopted from the Japanese word 大統領 (daitōryō), which in turn was derived from the English word "president". The term 总统 was officially adopted as the title for the head of state of the Republic of China in 1912, and it has been used ever since to refer to the president of China.
