นิรุกติศาสตร์และส่วนประกอบ

The Chinese word 北极 (Běijí) for "North Pole" is composed of two characters: 北 (běi), meaning "north", and 极 (jí), meaning "pole" or "extreme". The character 北 is a pictograph depicting a person standing with their back to the sun, indicating the north direction. The character 极 is a combination of two parts: the upper part 日 (rì), meaning "sun", and the lower part 止 (zhǐ), meaning "stop" or "limit". Together, they convey the idea of the "limit of the sun", or the point where the sun reaches its highest or lowest point in the sky. When combined, 北极 (Běijí) literally means "the northernmost point", referring to the North Pole, the northernmost point on Earth.
