The Chinese word 标题 (biaoti) for "title" is composed of two characters: 标 (biao) and 题 (ti). The character 标 (biao) originally meant "a target" or "a sign", and later extended to mean "to mark" or "to indicate". The character 题 (ti) originally meant "to raise" or "to lift", and later extended to mean "to write" or "to compose". When combined, the two characters 标题 (biaoti) literally mean "to mark a title" or "to write a title". This compound word has been used in Chinese for centuries to refer to the title of a book, article, or other piece of writing.
