The Chinese word 早上 (zǎoshang) for "morning" is composed of two characters: 早 (zǎo) and 上 (shàng). The character 上 originally meant "to ascend" or "to go up" and was later extended to mean "above" or "on top". When combined, the two characters 早上 literally mean "the time when the sun ascends" or "the time when it is light outside".
