The Chinese word 石油 (shíyóu) for "petroleum" is a compound of two characters: 石 (shí), meaning "stone" or "rock", and 油 (yóu), meaning "oil" or "fat". The term 石油 was first used in the 11th century during the Song Dynasty to refer to a type of flammable liquid that could be found seeping out of rocks. The name 石油 literally means "rock oil", which accurately describes the substance's origin and composition. Over time, the term 石油 became the standard Chinese word for petroleum and is still used today.
