The Chinese word 天堂 (tiāntáng) for "heaven" or "paradise" is composed of two characters: 天 (tiān) and 堂 (táng). 天 originally meant "sky" or "heaven" in ancient Chinese, and it has been used in this sense for thousands of years. The character 堂 (táng) originally meant "hall" or "chamber", and it was often used to refer to a place where people gathered for important events or ceremonies. Over time, the combination of 天 and 堂 came to be used to refer to a place of great happiness and peace, which is what we now know as "heaven" or "paradise".
