The Chinese word 节目 (jiémù) is a compound word consisting of two characters: 节 (jié) and 目 (mù). The character 节 originally meant "bamboo joint" or "segment", and later extended to mean "node", "joint", "section", or "period". The character 目 originally meant "eye", and later extended to mean "item", "entry", or "list". When combined, the two characters 节目 literally mean "sections of a list" or "items on a program". In modern Chinese, 节目 is used to refer to a "program", "show", or "performance". It can be used to refer to a TV show, a radio program, a stage performance, or any other type of organized entertainment.
