The Chinese word 元素 (yuánsù) for "element" is composed of two characters: 元 (yuán) and 素 (sù). The character 元 originally meant "head" or "beginning" and was later extended to mean "origin" or "source". The character 素 originally meant "plain" or "unadorned" and was later extended to mean "simple" or "basic". When combined, the two characters 元 and 素 form the word 元素, which literally means "original simplicity" or "basic substance". This meaning is consistent with the scientific concept of an element as a fundamental substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
