The Chinese character 床 (chuáng) for "bed" is composed of two parts: 木 (mù) meaning "wood" and 床 (chuáng) meaning "bedstead". The character 床 originally referred to a simple wooden platform used for sleeping, and over time it came to refer to the more elaborate beds we use today. The character 床 is also used in other contexts, such as in the phrase 床前明月光 (chuáng qián míng yuè guāng), which means "bright moonlight in front of the bed".
