The Chinese word 大奖赛 (dàjiǎngsài) is a compound of three characters: 大 (dà), meaning "big" or "grand"; 奖 (jiǎng), meaning "prize" or "award"; and 赛 (sài), meaning "competition" or "race". Together, these characters form the term "Grand Prix", which is a type of international motor racing event. The term 大奖赛 was first used in China in the early 20th century, when the country began to host its own Grand Prix races. The term quickly became popular, and is now used to refer to any type of major international sporting event.
