一维码 (yīwéimǎ)
one-dimensional code
The Chinese word 二维码 (èr wéi mǎ) is a compound of two characters: 二 (èr), meaning "two," and 维 (wéi), meaning "dimension." The term "two-dimensional code" refers to the fact that the code is made up of a two-dimensional array of black and white squares. The first use of the term 二维码 in Chinese can be traced back to 1994, when it was used in a paper by Japanese researchers Masahiro Hara and Hiroyuki Morikawa. The term was later adopted by the Chinese government in 2002, when it was included in the national standard for information technology. The term 二维码 is now widely used in China to refer to two-dimensional barcodes. These codes are used in a variety of applications, including product packaging, advertising, and mobile payments.
