นิรุกติศาสตร์และส่วนประกอบ

The Chinese word 番茄 (fānqié) for tomato is derived from the Spanish word "tomate", which in turn comes from the Nahuatl word "tomatl". The word "tomatl" was first recorded in the 16th century by the Spanish conquistadors who encountered the fruit in Mexico. The Spanish then introduced the tomato to Europe, where it quickly became a popular food. The Chinese word 番茄 was first used in the 17th century to refer to the tomato, which was introduced to China by Portuguese traders. The word 番茄 is a combination of two Chinese characters: 番 (fān), which means "foreign", and 茄 (qié), which means "eggplant". The name 番茄 thus literally means "foreign eggplant", reflecting the fact that the tomato was a new and exotic fruit to the Chinese.
