The Chinese word 放下 (fàngxià) is composed of two characters: 放 (fàng) and 下 (xià). The character 放 originally meant "to let go" or "to release", and it is often used in the sense of "to put down" or "to lay down". The character 下 originally meant "down" or "below", and it is often used in the sense of "to descend" or "to fall". When these two characters are combined, the resulting word 放下 takes on the meaning of "to let go of" or "to put down". In a figurative sense, 放下 can also mean "to give up" or "to abandon". For example, the phrase 放下屠刀,立地成佛 (fàngxià túdāo, lìdì chéngfó) means "to give up the butcher's knife and immediately become a Buddha", which is a metaphor for renouncing violence and achieving enlightenment.
