The Chinese character 福 (fú) is composed of two parts: the radical 示 (shì), which means "altar" or "sacrifice," and the phonetic component 畐 (bèi), which is a simplified form of the character 貝 (bèi), which means "cowry shell." The combination of these two components suggests the idea of "sacrificing a cowry shell to the gods," which was believed to bring good fortune and blessings. Over time, the character 福 came to be used more broadly to represent happiness, good luck, and prosperity. It is often used in Chinese New Year decorations and greetings, and is also a popular name for businesses and organizations.
