The Chinese word 关注 (guānzhù) is composed of two characters: 观 (guān) and 注 (zhù). 观 originally meant "to look at" or "to observe", while 注 meant "to pour" or "to focus". When combined, 关注 literally means "to focus one's attention on something". In modern Chinese, 关注 is used as a verb meaning "to pay attention to" or "to be concerned about", and as a noun meaning "attention" or "concern". For example, we can say 我很关注你的学习成绩 (wǒ hěn guānzhù nǐ de xuéxí chéngjì), which means "I am very concerned about your academic performance".
