The Chinese character 录 (lù) is composed of two parts: the radical 聿 (yù), which represents a writing brush, and the phonetic component 录 (lù), which is a simplified form of the character 録 (lù), meaning "to record" or "to write down". The character 录 first appeared in the oracle bone script, the earliest form of Chinese writing, and was originally used as a verb meaning "to record" or "to write down". Over time, the meaning of 录 expanded to include "to select" or "to choose", as well as "to copy" or "to transcribe". In modern Chinese, 录 is commonly used in words related to recording, such as 录音 (lùyīn) "audio recording", 录像 (lùxiàng) "video recording", and 录入 (lùrù) "to enter data".
