The Chinese word 强度 (qiángdù) is composed of two characters: 强 (qiáng) and 度 (dù). The character 强 originally meant "bow" or "crossbow", and later extended to mean "strong" or "powerful". The character 度 originally meant "to cross" or "to pass", and later extended to mean "degree" or "extent". When combined, the two characters 强度 literally mean "the degree of strength" or "the extent of power". In modern Chinese, 强度 is used to refer to the intensity or magnitude of a force, such as the strength of an earthquake or the brightness of a light. It can also be used to refer to the strength or durability of a material, such as the tensile strength of steel or the hardness of a diamond.
