The Chinese word 圣诞节 (Shèngdànjié) for Christmas is a compound of three characters: 圣 (shèng), meaning "holy" or "sacred"; 诞 (dàn), meaning "birth"; and 节 (jié), meaning "festival" or "holiday". Together, they form the phrase "Holy Birth Festival", which is a direct translation of the English term "Christmas". The word 圣诞节 was first used in China during the late 19th century, when Christian missionaries began to arrive in the country and spread their religion. It quickly became the standard Chinese term for Christmas, and is still used today by both Christians and non-Christians alike.
