The Chinese word 塑料 (sùliào) for "plastic" is derived from the Greek word "plastikos", which means "capable of being molded or shaped". The term was first used in English in the 19th century to describe a new type of material that could be easily molded into different shapes. The Chinese word 塑料 was coined in the early 20th century by the Chinese chemist Fan Xudong, who combined the characters 塑 (sù), meaning "to mold" or "to shape", and 料 (liào), meaning "material". The term 塑料 is now widely used in Chinese to refer to a wide range of plastic materials, including polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyvinyl chloride.
