The Chinese character 算 (suàn) for "calculate" or "reckon" is composed of two parts: 艹 (cǎo) and 祘 (suàn). 艹 represents grass, and 祘 originally meant "bamboo slips for counting". In ancient China, people used bamboo slips to record numbers and perform calculations. The character 算 thus came to mean "calculate" or "reckon".Over time, the character 祘 simplified to 算, and it is now the standard form of the character. The character 算 is also used in other words related to calculation, such as 算法 (suànfǎ, algorithm), 计算 (jìsuàn, calculation), and 算盘 (suànpán, abacus).
