The Chinese word 只是 (zhǐshì) is composed of two characters: 只 (zhǐ) and 是 (shì). The character 只 originally meant "only" or "just", and it is still used in this sense today. The character 是 is a verb that means "to be" or "to exist". When these two characters are combined, they create a new word that has a slightly different meaning. 只是 can be translated as "only", "just", or "merely", but it can also be used to express a sense of regret or disappointment. For example, the sentence 他只是个孩子 (tā zhǐshì gè háizi) can be translated as "He is just a child", but it can also be interpreted as "He is only a child, so he doesn't understand".
