The Chinese word 经济 (jīngjì) for "economics" is composed of two characters: 经 (jīng) and 济 (jì). The character 经 originally meant "warp" or "main thread" in the context of weaving, and later extended to mean "constant", "regular", or "classic". The character 济 originally meant "to cross a river" or "to help", and later extended to mean "to save", "to benefit", or "to manage". When combined, the two characters 经济 (jīngjì) took on the meaning of "managing the economy" or "economic management". Over time, the term came to be used more broadly to refer to the field of economics as a whole.
