The Chinese word 星期 (xīngqī) for "week" is derived from the Chinese characters 星 (xīng) meaning "star" and 期 (qī) meaning "period" or "cycle". The term 星期 originally referred to the seven-day cycle of the week in ancient Chinese astronomy, which was based on the observation of the positions of the seven visible planets (日月金木水火土) in the night sky. Each day of the week was named after one of these planets, with Sunday being 日曜日 (rìyàoqī), Monday being 月曜日 (yuèyàoqī), Tuesday being 火曜日 (huǒyàoqī), Wednesday being 水曜日 (shuǐyàoqī), Thursday being 木曜日 (mùyàoqī), Friday being 金曜日 (jīnyàoqī), and Saturday being 土曜日 (tǔyàoqī). Over time, the term 星期 came to be used more generally to refer to the seven-day week as a unit of time, and the names of the days of the week were simplified to 星期日 (xīngqīrì), 星期一 (xīngqīyī), 星期二 (xīngqīèr), 星期三 (xīngqīsān), 星期四 (xīngqīsì), 星期五 (xīngqīwǔ), and 星期六 (xīngqīliù).
