The Chinese word 中华 (Zhōnghuá) is a compound word consisting of two characters: 中 (zhōng) and 华 (huá). The character 中 (zhōng) originally meant "center" or "middle", but it has also been used to refer to China since ancient times. The character 华 (huá) originally meant "flower" or "blossom", but it has also been used to refer to China since the Han dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD). The combination of these two characters, 中华 (Zhōnghuá), therefore, means "Central Flowery Land" or "Middle Kingdom". This name reflects the traditional Chinese view of China as the center of the world and the most civilized country.
