Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 卫生间 (wèishēngjiān) is a compound of two characters: 卫生 (wèishēng) and 间 (jiān). 卫生 means "hygiene" or "sanitation", while 间 means "room" or "space". So, 卫生间 literally means "hygiene room" or "sanitation room".The word 卫生间 is relatively new, and it was not until the early 20th century that it came into common use. Before that, people used a variety of other terms to refer to the bathroom, such as 茅房 (máofáng), 厕所 (cèsuǒ), and 洗手间 (xǐshǒujiān).The term 卫生间 is now the most common way to refer to the bathroom in Mandarin Chinese. It is used in both formal and informal settings, and it is understood by people of all ages and backgrounds.
