Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 服装 (fúzhuāng) for "clothing" is composed of two characters: 服 (fú) and 装 (zhuāng). The character 服 originally meant "to cover" or "to wear", and was later extended to mean "clothing" or "dress". The character 装 originally meant "to load" or "to fill", and was later extended to mean "to dress up" or "to decorate". Thus, the compound word 服装 literally means "to cover and decorate the body", which is a fitting description for clothing. It's worth noting that the word 服装 is relatively new in the Chinese language, dating back only to the early 20th century. Before that, the word 衣裳 (yīshàng) was more commonly used to refer to clothing. However, 服装 has gradually replaced 衣裳 as the preferred term, and is now the standard word for "clothing" in modern Chinese.
