The Chinese word 工程师 (gōngchéngshī) for "engineer" is a compound of two characters: 工程 (gōngchéng) and 师 (shī). 工程 literally means "public works" or "engineering project", and is composed of the characters 工 (gōng), meaning "work" or "labor", and 程 (chéng), meaning "process" or "procedure". 师 (shī) means "teacher" or "master", and is often used as a suffix to indicate a person who is skilled in a particular field. Thus, 工程师 literally means "a person who is skilled in engineering projects", or simply "engineer". The term 工程师 is commonly used in China to refer to professionals who work in the field of engineering, including civil engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and so on.
