Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 公主 (gōngzhǔ) for "princess" is composed of two characters: 公 (gōng) and 主 (zhǔ). The character 公 originally meant "public" or "common", but over time it came to be used as a title of respect for men, such as "duke" or "lord". The character 主 originally meant "master" or "owner", but it also came to be used as a title of respect for women, such as "lady" or "madam". When these two characters are combined, they create the word 公主, which specifically refers to a female member of the royal family.
