Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 国王 (guówáng) for "king" is composed of two characters: 国 (guó) and 王 (wáng). The character 国 originally meant "city-state" or "country" and was often used to refer to China as a whole. The character 王 originally meant "ruler" or "lord" and was often used to refer to the head of a state or kingdom. Over time, the two characters came to be combined to form the word 国王, which specifically refers to a male monarch or king.
