Etymology & Components

The Chinese word 乐观 (lèguān) is composed of two characters: 乐 (lè), meaning "joy" or "happiness," and 观 (guān), meaning "to look" or "to observe." Together, these characters convey the idea of "looking on the bright side" or "being optimistic."The word 乐观 first appeared in Chinese literature during the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). It was used by the poet Li Bai in his poem "The Song of the Eight Immortals," in which he wrote: "The Eight Immortals are always optimistic, / They laugh and sing and dance all day long."Since then, 乐观 has become a common word in Chinese, used to describe people who are positive and hopeful, even in difficult circumstances. It is also used as a noun to refer to optimism itself. The opposite of 乐观 is 悲观 (bēiguān), which means "pessimistic." 悲观 is composed of the characters 悲 (bēi), meaning "sadness" or "grief," and 观 (guān), meaning "to look" or "to observe." Together, these characters convey the idea of "looking on the dark side" or "being pessimistic."
