The Chinese character 签 (qiān) is composed of two parts: 僉 (qiān) and 木 (mù). 僉 means "all" or "together", while 木 means "wood". The original meaning of 签 is a wooden stick or slip of bamboo that is used for divination or drawing lots. In ancient China, people would write their questions or wishes on wooden sticks and then draw one at random to receive an answer or make a decision. Over time, the meaning of 签 expanded to include other types of slips of paper or cards that are used for various purposes, such as tickets, receipts, or contracts. The character 签 can also be used as a verb, meaning "to sign" or "to put one's signature on something".
