The Chinese word 机场 (jīchǎng) for "airport" is a compound of two characters: 机 (jī), meaning "machine" or "airplane," and 场 (chǎng), meaning "place" or "field." The term 机场 was coined in the early 20th century to describe the new landing fields for airplanes, which were becoming increasingly common at the time. The character 机 was chosen because airplanes were seen as a type of machine, and the character 场 was chosen because these landing fields were typically large, open areas. The term 机场 has been used ever since to refer to airports in Chinese.
