The Chinese word 如今 (rújīn) is composed of two characters: 如 (rú) and 今 (jīn). The character 如 originally meant "like" or "similar to", but over time it has come to be used in a more general sense to mean "as" or "according to". The character 今 means "now" or "the present time". So, the word 如今 literally means "as of now" or "at the present time". It is often used to introduce a new topic or to indicate a change in circumstances. For example, you might say 如今，中国经济发展迅速 (rújīn, zhōngguó jīngjì fāzhǎn xùnsù), which means "Nowadays, China's economy is developing rapidly".
